What is Pilates?
Pilates is a non-impact form of exercise emphasizing core strengthening. At Moving Arts, we follow the Stott Pilates training method.
How is Pilates taught?
We offer equipment sessions in a private or small group (2-3 people) format for a more customized workout. Mat classes are offered at two levels for groups no larger than 12. Each session is an hour emphasizing the principles of proper placement as well as the correct muscular emphasis.
Is it appropriate for me?
Because Pilates has applications both physical rehabilitation (Moving Arts is not, however, involved in physical rehabilitation) and in fitness, its broad range allows suitability for anyone who is medically clear for exercise. The repertoire includes 500 exercises of varying complexity and difficulty with modifications for physical limitations. The average Pilates enthusiast is between 14 and 75 years young.
How often should one do Pilates?
To see benefits, you need at least one session per week. With 2-3 sessions per week, you will see more dramatic improvement. A complete exercise program would also include some cardiovascular activity.
What kind of equipment is used in Pilates?
At Moving Arts, we incorporate the most popular piece of equipment, the Reformer into private and duet sessions. We will also incorporate the Cadillac and stability chair into equipment sessions. In the mat classes, we vary the use of BOSU’s, small balls, fitness circles, & flex-bands for variety. Our goal is to keep fitness interesting.
Can Pilates from a video offer benefits?
Video tapes are a wonderful supplement to pilates training. The drawbacks are that to keep variety in your workout you need a pile of them and more significantly, a trainer on a video cannot address your specific needs or questions.
